Type Locality and Naming

Includes in Dushanbe-west Shirkent-Luchob, east Shirkent-Luchob. It is identified by F. R. Benit (1965).

Synonym: Vakhshvarskaya Suite, Вахшиварская свита

Lithology and Thickness

It consists of greenstone liparites, dacites, albite-phiarites, quartz and dacite porphyries, their tuffs, tuffaloes, and tuff-breccias. In lesser quantities, limestones, clay shales, sandstones, and conglomerates are present. The thickness of the suite is 1200-1500 m.

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

The Vakhshvar Fm lies with an unconformity on the Tournaisian - Lower Visean Zoy Fm (зойской свите) or, with an angular unconformity, directly on the Obizarrang Fm (обизаранrской свите) of the Vendian - Lower Paleozoic.

Upper contact

On the described territory, the tops of the Vakhshvar Fm (вахшиварской свиты) are not exposed, and further west, it is conformably overlain by the volcanics of the Hajirbulak Fm (хаджирбулакской Свиты) of the Upper Serpukhovian.

Regional extent

It is widespread in the Dushanbe region.

Fossils

In the lower part of the Vakhshvar Fm (вахшиварской свиты), Visean brachiopods Striatifera striata Fisch., Gigantoproductus giganteus Mart., and others; rugose corals Lithostrotion irregulare Phill., and others; tabulate corals Syringopora ramulosa Goldf., and others, as well as, according to D. A. Starshinina's data, an abundant complex of Middle Visean foraminifera, are found. In the upper part of the suite, remains of Lower Namurian (Serpukhovian) brachiopods Spirifer ci. bisulcatus Sow., Marginifera schartimiensis Yan., Dictyoclostus ex gr. semiriticulatus Mart., Productus concinnus Sow., Schizophoria resupinata Mart. are encountered.


Age 

Based on the fossil data, the suite belongs to the Middle, Upper Visean, and Lower Serpukhovian.
